The Planer

IMG_1495.jpg

My thickness planer is a Dewalt DW734 12.25". The planer is an invaluable machine in my shop because I work with a lot of rough-sawn lumber that needs to have all four sides dressed before being used for furniture. The planer is the machine that surfaces the wider sides of the board, leaving a glass smooth finish. The board is fed into the front of the machine and under the cutterhead, which shears off about 1/32" for each pass through the machine. The workpiece then exits the machine out the back.

Since the planer is my go-to machine for quick stock removal and final thicknessing, it creates a lot of sawdust. For this reason, it has a 4" dust collection port on the back of the machine, shown in the picture to the right. I hook the planer up to my central dust collection system and that takes care of nearly all of the shavings.
